Because God is love and because he is righteous, he is also a God of wrath. Sin and wickedness stem from dethroning God and placing something or someone else on the throne (often ourselves). This leads to disordered living and darkened understanding. Because God loves us, he confronts us with our sin calling us back to himself. Ultimately the only way we can be saved is through faith in Christ.
